“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.
This verse is a warning to anyone who would pray in public just so that others will see them pray in public. It is right and good to pray for one another, and to pray publicly as the Holy Spirit moves us, and as we meet together in the unity of the body of Christ. However, the authentic heart for God will pray to Him in secret; evidence that all else that is done comes from an overflow of gratitude, love, and an authentic faith in Jesus. Holy Spirit, lead us into personal prayer time in secret with God. Let our secret prayer life set the tone for what is done in public.
