Guatemala announced it would move its embassy to Jerusalem on Sunday night.

President of Guatemala, Jimmy Morales, announced his country would relocate its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem after holding a conversation with Prime Minister Netanyahu.

He wrote Sunday “Dear people of Guatemala, today I spoke with the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu. We are talking about the excellent relations that we have had as nations since Guatemala supported the creation of the State of Israel. One of the most important topics was the return of the embassy of Guatemala to Jerusalem. So I inform you that I have instructed the chancellor to initiate the respective coordination so that it may be. God bless you.”

Guatemala was one of the nine states that voted against the United Nations General Assembly resolution submitted to the special emergency session on Jerusalem.

Turkey and Yemen requested the emergency session on behalf of Arab states following the United States veto of the draft resolution at the UN Security Council on Monday. Of the 193-members of the General Assembly, a total of 128 countries voted in favor of the resolution. The United States, Israel, Guatemala, Honduras, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Micronesia, Palau and Togo voted against the resolution, with 35 countries abstaining.

Prime Minister Netanyahu praised Guatemala’s decision, stating on Christmas day “Last night I spoke with my friend, Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales. I thanked him for Guatemala’s support for us in the UN vote and I expressed my hope that he would follow in the footsteps of US President Donald Trump, recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and begin to move the embassy to it… God bless you, my friend, President Jimmy Morales. God bless both our countries, Israel and Guatemala.”

He added “We are waiting for you here in Jerusalem. I told you recently that there will be other countries that would recognize Jerusalem and announce the transfer of their embassies to it. Well here is the second country and I reiterate: It is only the beginning and it is important.”

Reports surfaced Monday that Paraguay is also considering moving its embassy to Jerusalem, with reports that Prime Minister Netanyahu is personally lobbying heads of state through out South America.

Political affairs advisor to Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas, Majdi al-Khalidi reportedly stated in response to President Morales’s announcement Monday, “This is a disappointing decision that we must fight by the way of political and diplomatic measures… According to the UN General Assembly’s decision, no country has the right to move its embassy to Jerusalem or recognize the city as Israel’s capital All decisions to move embassies to Jerusalem are null and void and illegal.”

Prime Minister Netanyahu recently made history as Israel’s first sitting prime minister to visit South America in September of this year. The prime minister traveled to Argentina, Colombia and Mexico, participating in ceremonies, meeting with heads of state and holding numerous business meetings, his tour centered on increasing Israel’s stance international, as well as opening doors of cooperation, business and diplomatic relations.

He stated during his United Nations General Assembly address in New York City following his South America tour “I went to South America, visiting Argentina and Colombia, and then I went on to Mexico, becoming, if you can believe it, the first Israeli prime minister ever to visit Latin America. After 70 years, the world is embracing Israel, and Israel is embracing the world. One year. Six continents…”

The United States, Czech Republic and Paraguay have all confirmed they will move their embassies to Israel capital, Jerusalem, following the United Nations efforts over the past weeks.
